Installation Help
So the big day is here. You're ready to install your new cabinets. We've got a few tips to help:
Preparing for Delivery Day
- Your order may take up a lot of space. Clear a large enough area to accommodate all boxes with a minimum of stacking. This area must stay clean and dry until your cabinets are installed.
- After you remove your old cabinets, set up a temporary kitchen. Move your microwave or toaster oven to an area dedicated to preparing simple meals. Stock up on easy-to-prepare foods. Pick a place for cleanup (laundry room or garage utility sinks work well).
- Consider dining out or doing carry-out during the remodel.
- Clear everything out of your kitchen—including appliances and furniture. Be sure to have a licensed, professional contractor disconnect gas or electrical connections.
- Tape down heavy cardboard to protect your floor. Control dust by hanging heavy plastic sheeting over all entrances. Change air filters before, during after construction to protect your furnace and air conditioner.
- Have containers and heavy-duty trash bags available.
Delivery Day
- Check your inventory to be sure you received your entire order. If there are any missing or improper parts, contact your designer or customer service. Inspect the outside of each box for obvious visible damage and note on the packing list.
- Perform cabinet inspection as soon after delivery as possible—to allow time for replacements to be received before installation begins.
- Store your cabinets in a low-traffic area that is dry and away from excess humidity, cold or heat. Keep your cabinets boxed after you inspect them for damage.
- Avoid moving cabinets exessively or stacking cabinets. Moldings can be broken so place them in a corner.
- Always have two people move boxes.
Helping Your Contractor
- Plan for extra storage for the installer's tools and equipment.
- Designate one family member as the primary contact person for the contractor.
- Check locks, keys and security systems—you might need to share keys and codes with the contractor.
- Make sure you, your kids and pets stay out of the way of the work crews.
- Expect the unexpected and stay calm and flexible.
- Treat the workers nicely. A word of appreciation, cup of coffee or cold drink goes a long way.
- Try not to question every step. Workers are following orders and contruction specs. Keep discussions about the project with the authorized contractor.
